Classroom Etiquette 101
Our classrooms are heavily used, with many fully scheduled from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM or later. With such heavy usage, it is inevitable that problems and conflicts will arise. We ask you to take note of the following practices that may help to minimize these conflicts.
Explore your classroom before the start of the term. Make sure you are familiar with the operation of light switches, instructional technology, window shades, etc. Training is freely available – e.g., through the Center for Media and Educational Technology. If you need help locating training assistance, contact the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Ken Doxsee (6-2846, firstname.lastname@example.org).
Report problems immediately
If problems arise with the physical infrastructure – malfunctioning technology equipment, burned-out lights or projector bulbs, broken seats, inadequate routine maintenance, etc. – don’t leave it for the next class to discover, but rather report it. A placard in the room should provide relevant contact information, or refer to the contacts listed above. You may also simply contact the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Ken Doxsee (6-2846, email@example.com), who heads the CAI. Many routine maintenance problems can be fixed overnight (or sooner), but only if we know about them.
You will never be assigned a classroom that does not have enough seats to accommodate your class’ official enrollment. It is unfortunately not possible for us to anticipate how many non-enrolled students may seek to attend, hoping to gain a seat; this is almost always the source of concern about inadequate classroom capacity. (You will need to exercise your own judgment regarding whether or not to allow non-enrolled students to sit in.) Rarely, you may find insufficient seats for your official enrollment. This is usually the result of furniture having been “pirated.” Please report the problem immediately; it will be addressed with the same urgency.
Make sure the next instructor is accorded the same respect you expect and deserve when you enter the classroom to teach – end classes on time, return equipment to default settings, and move away from the podium when the next instructor needs to set up. Move follow-up conversations outside the classroom. Ask your students to remove any trash they may have generated.
