Instruction and learning take place in a wide variety of environments, ranging from “traditional” classrooms to high-tech multimedia centers, and also including laboratories, studios, and outdoor spaces. Sites remote from the campus are increasingly serving as environments for instruction as well, with students engaged in field studies and those simply choosing or unable to be present physically on campus using electronic remote access and distance learning opportunities.

Even the traditional classroom has undergone a substantial metamorphosis, with multi-media rooms equipped with the full range of electronic support devices becoming the norm. While much face-to-face instruction still takes place in the relatively low-tech confines of traditional classrooms, the needs within such settings have evolved dramatically, with many studies suggesting the importance of flexibility in design (moveable furniture, etc.).

The University provides opportunities and support for all learning environments. Given the wide range of facilities and technologies involved, relevant information may rightly appear rather scattered and fragmented. Through this Web page and its links, the Office of Academic Affairs seeks to provide a simple, comprehensive portal to this information, serving needs ranging from immediate crises – e.g., the instructor desperate for replacement of a projector bulb – to long-range issues – e.g., the campus planner contemplating new classroom developments.
