President and Provost's Welcome

Richard Lariviere
Welcome.  New to the University of Oregon myself, I suspect you were drawn here for many of the same reasons I was.  The university is among the best public universities nationally, providing enduring innovation in research, devoted excellence in teaching, and extensive service and outreach to Oregon and the nation. Our students receive a superior education and leave with the tools and experiences needed to make the state and world a better place.

One of the many reasons I chose to come here was because of the people who make the UO great-people like you, our faculty (tenure and non-tenure-related), our officers of administration, and our dedicated classified staff.  It is you who nurture the dreams of our students, who lead the research found nowhere else, who make sure the inner-workings of the university foster a community as much as an efficient university.

Individually, we are leaders and innovators, but together we create the heart of this university, a place where we provide the highest-quality scholarship and shape lives in ways we may never know.

Thank you for bringing your knowledge, experience, passion, and commitment to the University of Oregon.  I wish you the best in your professional and personal pursuits at the UO. It won't be long before you and I can find our way around campus without getting lost.

President Richard Lariviere

James Bean

Welcome to the faculty of the University of Oregon.  We share a commitment to academic excellence with our peers in the Association of American Universities.  Yet we are a unique institution.  We are independent thinkers who value excellence in our lives as well as our work.  We value excellence in our environment and beauty in our surroundings as reflected in this magnificent campus.  We value a human scale that allows interdisciplinarity based in personal relationships.  We value a global perspective informed by local values.

In joining this faculty you will need to appreciate these values; then help us evolve them. Through sharing your knowledge and wisdom with our students and with our new colleagues, your special talents now become part of the fabric of what makes Oregon mighty - its faculty.

In my role as provost I will work with the vice-presidents, vice-provosts, deans, and department heads to give you the greatest chance for success - with undergraduate teaching, with graduate teaching and research, and with service to the state, nation and the world.  You are the future of this institution.  We look forward to celebrating many achievements with you.
