Promotion & Tenure Guide
Guide to Promotion and Tenure at the University of Oregon
The University upholds high standards for promotion and tenure, and our faculty maintains a high success rate. Tenure is the result of accumulated accomplishments in research, teaching, and service, when together they indicate the potential for an enduring career of academic excellence. Activity, though, should not be confused with accomplishment.
We consider excellence in research to mean research that leads to a national and international reputation for creating new knowledge in one’s field. Excellence in teaching means excellence in fostering learning at all levels of instruction, both undergraduate and graduate. Excellence in service means service sufficient to establish one’s ability and commitment to participate in the success of the university, one’s academic field, and the communities in which those are situated.
