New Untenured Faculty

This workshop is provided for new faculty as a segment of the orientation process. It will address general promotion and tenure matters for untenured faculty. Aimed at tenure-related faculty, this workshop will help still untenured faculty understand the promotion and tenure process at the University of Oregon and how to orient research, teaching, and service to avoid problems down the line.

This workshop will provide information to department heads and key support staff involved in assembling P&T files. For department heads, there will be an emphasis on addressing complications in P&T cases including the timing of full professor cases, dealing with interpreting credit for prior service, timely solicitation of external reviewers, peer review of teaching, and other critical topics. For key staff, the focus will be on assembling and submitting complete files.

This workshop will provide department heads with information aimed at developing complete and effective promotion and tenure cases and avoiding unnecessary complications. The workshop will focus on a variety of issues including completeness of files, timeliness (including the timely solicitation of external reviewers and the timeliness of sending cases forward), informativeness vs. advocacy in department head reports, wisdom in timing the advancing of full professor cases, effectiveness of internal letters, interpreting credit for prior service, peer review of teaching, and other critical topics. We will also discuss plans to move toward electronic management and submission of P&T cases.

This workshop will address Promotion and Tenure matters for faculty who will undergo review during AY 2009-2010. Aimed at both tenure cases and promotions to full professor, this workshop will focus on the promotion and tenure process, the timing of the efforts required, and the respective roles of the department, the department head, and the candidate. If you will be a candidate for tenure or promotion (or both) during AY 2009-2010, this workshop is for you.

This workshop will provide tenured faculty with information aimed at developing complete and effective cases of promotion to (full) professor. We will focus on a variety of issues including timing the advancing of full professor cases; expectations for research, publication, and creative accomplishments; expectations for teaching and service; time in rank and promotion; completeness of files; and other critical topics. There will also be time to answer your questions.

Thisforum for new faculty members will address the multiple approaches todiversity across academic disciplines. Diversity is a central issue anda focus of study in some academic disciplines whereas it is at bestperipheral in others. Does each discipline have aresponsibility to address diversity? We will consider how differentdisciplines attach meaning and value to diversity, looking at areas ofoverlap as well as possible misunderstanding. This is a panel discussion. Panelmembers are Daniel HoSang, Assistant Professor, Political Science andEthnic Studies; Peter O'Day, Associate Professor, Neurosciences; CarolStabile, Professor, English and Journalism.
