Dear Colleagues:
The University of Oregon faculty is the foundation for this great universitys
success as an internationally prestigious comprehensive research university. Our
excellence as an academy is maintained by the facultys leadership in realizing our
educational mission.
I urge you to become familiar with the chapters of this handbook that address the
commitments we have made as a professoriate to maintain the highest standards of academic
excellence. These chapters address our joint responsibilities for campus governance,
academic freedom, effective teaching, quality research, and constituent service. They
describe the multiple responsibilities and opportunities we have as faculty at the
university to exercise leadership and responsibility in our academic and community
endeavors.
The university is committed to fostering the development of learning and working
environments characterized by professional and ethical behavior and free from
discrimination. These chapters provide resources and guidelines to help you to realize
to the fullest extent your professional opportunities in an environment that is dedicated
to the principles of equality of opportunity.
The tradition of faculty governance at the University of Oregon was established with
the universitys charter and is recognized in our state laws. Together, we have
responsibility for governing the institution in all matters of academic policy and student
discipline. I invite you to join in the leadership of this institution.
Sincerely,
Dave Frohnmayer
