Note that candidates may (entirely at their own option) waive their
right of access to confidential letters of reference. If they do so,
the names of the reviewers cannot be revealed to the candidate. The
file must contain a statement signed by the candidate explicitly waiving
right of access to all, a designated part, or none of the evaluative letters
submitted in the file. Sample language for such statements and for paragraphs
to include in letters to referees is attached. Committees and deans
should limit or avoid including the names of referees in their write-ups.
This makes redacting easier in cases resulting in a negative decision,
and for which the candidate exercises his or her right to request redacted
versions or substantive summaries of the recommendations by the Faculty
Personnel Committee and the Dean in order to prepare an appeal.
